Organic Vegetables Project
The purpose of this project as designed by the parish staff is to provide the seeds, teaching and technical support for small farmers to begin producing crops of healthy vegetables and to market these products to the wider community. The project involves working with farmers already familiar with larger scale farming of corn and beans and teaching them organic techniques for fertilization and pest control including greenhouses, seed silos, and vermiculture. The project currently involves 28 men and two women growing a wide variety of vegetables. They are exploring new possibilities for cash crops and developing market opportunities.
Results: The project has seen the successful introduction of vegetable varieties into the diets of the local communities, feeding immediate families and neighbors of the farmers. Slowly the participants are developing strategies to overcome issues of transportation and economy to sell surplus and compete in local markets with healthy and quality food.
